The Participate Project
This project is a major 3 year study into the use of
pervasive technology, such as mobile phones, GPS and Datalogging
sensing for use in schools, gaming (see 'ere be Dragons' to the
right) and the more general community. ScienceScope are proud to
be partners in the development. The BBC, as well as many
other organisations, are involved, visit the website at http://www.participateonline.co.uk/ |

'Ere Be
Dragons
'Ere Be Dragons is a game where the
player goes on a journey, as they explore the real world another
world is created on their pocket PC. This is a world beyond what
they see before them, a world that is created by their own
heartbeat. As they travel through this landscape the physical
and physiological changes that occur in their body helps to
create a different world in the game.

The project
is managed by Stephen Boyd Davis, head of the Lansdown Centre
for Electronic Arts. The technological developments have been
produced in collaboration with the Lansdown Centre for
Electronic Arts, at the Cat Hill site at Middlesex University
(London), in partnership with Mobile Bristol and Sciencescope
towards testing and using the heart rate monitor linked to the
HP IPAQ. Much of the research into potential devices, and some
of the basic programming to control the devices and interface
with the Mobile Bristol technology has been developed within the
department by Magnus Moar and John Cox.

The development of gaming technology for the 'ere be dragons
and Les Cyclistes projects originated with the Mobile Bristol HP
Labs project, of which ScienceScope were the datalogging sensing
technology providers. |
Another project
developed with the Landsdown centre for electronic arts is the
interactive bicycle as part of the 'Les
Cyclistes' exhibition in Brighton.
