Chemiluminescence of LuminolInvestigators often find bloodstains during their examination of a crime scene. They also find similar stains that could be a different substance, something other than blood, such as red paint. How would you test a stain to see if it is blood? Human
blood contains a pigment called haemoglobin, which is used to transport oxygen
through our body. This pigment is used in a number of tests to identify the
presence of blood. The most common test used by investigators to reveal the
presence of blood is the Luminol Test. In this test the bloodstain can be made
to glow with a blue light due to the chemiluminescent reaction of the Luminol
reagent with the iron (Fe) in the haemoglobin. View and/or download the worksheet View and/or download the Datadisc file examples of this investigation luminescence after adding the 'refreshing' iron (you must have Datadisc installed to view the file, downloadable from Download Centre)
